Sonja Lapraik

PhD Student in the History of Medicine
School of History, Classics and Archaeology, Newcastle University

Sonja Lapraik studied Classics at the University of Exeter, writing her dissertation on the prologue to Lucretius’ De rerum natura and Botticelli’s Primavera. She subsequently took an MA in the History of Medicine at Newcastle University, writing her dissertation on a Renaissance commentary of the Hippocratic text Peri parthenion. Sonja’s PhD thesis, The Portrait of Hippocrates in the Studiolo of Federico da Montefeltro (supervised by Dr. Thomas Rütten), combines her interest in both the history of medicine and the history of art, in particular that of the Italian Renaissance, examining the context in which the portrait of the ancient physician was painted with regard to the iconography of the studiolo, the Ducal library and the intellectual networks active in Urbino during Federico’s reign.
